Home/Key Procedures/Branchial Cleft Cyst
Branchial cleft cyst, also known as a cleft sinus, a branchial cleft cyst is a lump that develops in the neck or just below the collarbone. Branchial cleft cysts form during the development of the embryo. They occur when tissues in the neck and collarbone area (branchial cleft) fail to develop normally. The birth defect may appear as open spaces called sinuses, which may develop on one or both sides of the neck. A branchial cyst may form from fluid drained from a sinus. The cyst or sinus can become infected.
Branchial cysts can usually be diagnosed with a physical examination. Testing is usually not necessary.
Infected branchial cysts or sinuses require antibiotic treatment. Surgical excision is the treatment.
1. What is a branchial cleft cyst and its symptoms?
A branchial cleft cyst is a fluid-filled lump that forms on the side of the neck, usually from birth. Symptoms include a painless swelling, redness or tenderness if infected, and sometimes discharge if the cyst drains.
2. When should branchial cleft cyst surgery be performed?
Surgery is recommended if the cyst is large, recurrent, infected, or causing discomfort. Early removal helps prevent repeated infections and complications.
3. Is branchial sinus treatment different from cyst surgery?
Yes. A branchial sinus is an abnormal tract that may open on the skin or inside the neck. Treatment also involves surgical removal, but the procedure may be slightly different to remove the entire tract and prevent recurrence.
4. Can branchial cleft cysts return after treatment?
Recurrence is rare if the cyst or sinus is completely removed by an experienced surgeon. Partial removal increases the risk of the cyst coming back.
5. Who is the best surgeon in Bangalore for branchial cleft cyst removal?
Sakra World Hospital has skilled ENT and head & neck surgeons experienced in branchial cleft cyst and sinus surgeries, offering safe and precise care for both children and adults.
