Trustee of NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) “Sukriya? since 2007. Sukriya mainly offers medical help for the bread winners of the economically weaker family member suffering from Curable illness. Various patients have availed benefit through this NGO since 2007.

Chairman (Mahadevapura Health Task Force) - “Public Private Partnership “Adopted Government owned 3PHC (Primary Health Centers) to change it to a Model PHC with all the basic amenities including good structural development. The PPP is Headed by the Local Minister and Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Under this partnership, the private partner will intellectually & financially contribute significantly for the government activities. Part of this funding is given to the government to develop this model.

The goal of this is to reduce the maternal and infant mortality rates below the national level

Prof. Dr. Chandran Gnanamuthu



Designation: Senior Consultant - Neurology

Prof. Dr. Chandran Gnanamuthu is a Senior Neurologist with 40 years of experience in Clinical Medicine, Medical Research and Medical Education.

He has been trained in Internal Medicine and in Neurology at the Christian Medical College, Vellore. He also had further training at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, on an International Scholar program. He has published over 70 articles and abstracts in scientific journals. He has travelled widely to present papers at scientific conferences and for direct experience in Neuroscience centres in USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan and the Middle East.

During his 25-year tenure at CMC, Vellore as faculty Neurologist (University Affiliated Appointment), he had been Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology. He instituted various sub-specialties in the department, including Pediatric Neurology. He had also started the graduate program in Clinical Neuro-Electrophysiology. He organized setting up India’s first digitally networked Neuro-Electrophysiology Laboratory.

The DM Neurology training program he established at CMC Vellore is now considered one of the finest in India. He has been examiner to many medical universities in India and Oman.

He has made significant contributions to Neurology research and has published his works in peer-reviewed journals. His longtime research in the broad field of inflammatory and demyelinating diseases of the nervous system is often cited in the scientific literature. Some of his research has helped to understand the immunological mechanisms of various neurological disorders, and has opened new avenues of treatment in such diseases.

He is an elected fellow of both the Indian Academy of Neurology and the American Academy of Neurology.

He has also held senior administrative positions at the premier Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, as Deputy Medical Superintendent and later as Deputy Director. He had been involved in re-organizing and planning various aspects of the institution. A significant contribution was in the development of the networked Electronic Medical Record in the hospital, which later received recognition and appreciation from the NHS, UK and the WHO. During his headship of the multi-unitary Department of Neurological Sciences, the National Assessment and Accreditation

Council of the University Grants Commission in 2001 gave an outstanding rating for the department after a detailed peer review. The Week-Nielsen Best Hospitals Survey ranked this Neurology Department 4th in India (Published in The Week, 24 Nov 2013, pg 73).

With his wide interest in culture and travel, he has had work experience in diverse environments ranging from villages in rural Karnataka, India to the most advanced medical centres internationally.

He has also on short assignments headed Neurology at the Royal Hospital, Oman and the Bahrain Specialist Hospital, Bahrain – and helped set up these departments. These accomplishments have received wide acclaim. He was a consultant at the prestigious Wockhardt / Fortis Hospital, Bangalore, for almost 7 years. In all of these appointments, he has distinguished himself through expert patient care, his characteristic clinical acumen and professional leadership. He has established state-of-the-art clinical facilities for the management of Acute Stroke, Epilepsy, Movement & Behavioural Disorders, Neuromuscular diseases and Neuro-Critical Care.

Dr. Chandran’s leadership and mentorship have not only created the best Neurology departments and teams, but a legacy of many students who have gone on to distinguish themselves in the fields of Neurology and Medicine throughout the world.
