How to prevent and treat gum recession?

Gum recession is the process wherein the margin of the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth erodes or retracts. This exposes the tooth, or the root of the tooth, to further damage. When gum recession or gingival recession occurs, "pockets", or spaces, form between the teeth and the gum line. This facilitates the build-up of bacteria that can cause dental disease.

Why do gums recede?

Gums can recede for a number of reasons. Here are a few common causes for receding gums:
Poor dental hygiene: Insufficient brushing, flossing and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash facilitate the conversion of plaque into tartar. Tartar is a hard substance that accumulates on and between the teeth. This can only be removed by professional dental deep cleaning. This may eventually lead to recession of the gums, tooth loss and periodontal disease.

Smoking: Smoking weakens the immune system of the body. As a result, it is more difficult to fight off a gum infection. Once the gums are damaged, cigarette smoking also makes it harder for the gums to heal.

Hormonal changes in women: Fluctuation in the hormonal levels in a woman's body normally results in sensitive gums. This can further develop into gum disease and cause gum recession.

Periodontal disease: This medical condition is caused by bacteria and can result in exposed roots, bone loss and gum disease.

Are there any home remedies for gum recession?

Practice good oral hygiene: It is important to regularly brush and floss for overall oral health. Brushing vigorously can also result in loose teeth and gum erosion. It is important to brush regularly using a soft toothbrush.

Omega 3 fatty acids: Food rich in Omega 3 fatty acids help in improving overall gum health. These Omega 3 fatty acids can be found in food sources like fish, nuts and seeds.

Aloe Vera gel: Medicinal grade Aloe Vera gel helps in calming inflamed gums. It is also used to control certain symptoms of periodontitis.

Saltwater rinse: A regular saltwater rinse is recommended to soothe gum infection. It can also get rid of unwanted and harmful bacteria.

Oil pulling: The Ayurvedic practise of oil pulling has shown a reduction of plaque in certain individuals with gingivitis.
It is recommended to swish some coconut oil in the mouth for a couple of minutes (15-20minutes). After swishing, spit this oil out and rinse your mouth with saltwater and brush your teeth for maximum benefit.

How does a dentist treat receding gums?

Receding gums can lead to severe dental conditions. It is therefore important to seek medical advice for active advice, diagnosis, and treatment. Dentists perform different procedures based on the various stages of gum recession.

Deep cleaning: Early-stage gum recession can normally be cured through deep cleaning. In this process, plaque and tartar that have accumulated on the teeth, as well as the root surfaces below the gum line, are carefully removed. Furthermore, the exposed root area is smoothened to make it more difficult for the bacteria to attach.

Open flap scaling and root planing: This procedure is performed to eliminate bacterial pockets or reduce their size. It is done by folding the affected gum tissue.

Regeneration: Gum recession can result in loss of bone and tissue. A regenerative material, such as a membrane, graft tissue, or tissue-stimulating protein, will then be applied. This helps the body to naturally regenerate the lost bone and tissue.

Tissue graft/gum graft: Various types of grafts such as connective tissue graft or gingival grafts or pedicle can be performed to replace the lost gum tissue. The procedure is determined by the dentist based on the patient’s individual needs.
