Veneers are a great way to improve your smile, especially if your teeth are chipped, misaligned, discoloured or have gaps. Veneers are thin, tooth-coloured shell coverings that are placed over the front (visible) part of the tooth, changing their colour, shape, size, or length. They look like natural teeth and are made of either porcelain or composite resin material. They are a great option for patients seeking a natural appearance, long-lasting, affordable and stain-resistant.
Porcelain Veneers are known to solve a wide range of dental issues, which include but are not limited to:
Uneven spaces or gaps between the teeth.
Misalignment of teeth or uneven teeth.
Permanent staining of teeth.
Treats fractures in the natural tooth or fixes chipped tooth
Creates a uniform looking smile and brightens the teeth.
Veneers are typically made of porcelain or composite resin material. Each type has its own set of advantages.
Porcelain Veneers are custom-made to fit on the tooth. They are strong and long-lasting and have a natural-looking surface. Also, less tooth enamel needs to be removed during the procedure and they do not stain easily.
Composite veneers are fabricated in a dental laboratory and are bonded to the teeth with resin cement. Composite veneers are less expensive than porcelain veneers, but they do not last as long as porcelain veneers. Composite veneers last for almost 4-7 years.
Porcelain veneers are relatively expensive, but they are beneficial in terms of durability. They last for almost 10-15 years.
Dental Veneers Procedure
Examination and treatment planning: During this appointment, your dentist will examine your teeth to make sure dental veneers are the best option for you. They will further discuss the procedure, risks, post-treatment care, etc. X-rays or impressions of the mouth are taken at this stage.
Preparation: To prepare the tooth for a veneer, the tooth surface will have to be reshaped. The dentist may need to remove half a millimetre of enamel from the tooth surface, which is equal to the veneer thickness that will be replaced. Mild anaesthesia will be given to numb the area. Next, the dentist will take an impression and send it to the laboratory which will create or make the veneer. It takes around 2-3 weeks for the veneers to arrive at the dental clinic from the lab. During this period some top dentist in Bangalore may offer temporary veneers.
Bonding: To prepare your tooth for the veneer, it will be cleaned and polished to ensure a strong bonding process. The dentist will apply acid gel to the teeth before placing the veneers, which will create a rough surface.
Next, a special kind of cement is applied to the veneer and placed on the tooth. The dentist will then use intense heat (curing light) or pressure on the veneer, to increase the strength of the material so that it becomes hard quickly.
Finally, the dentist will remove any excess cement, and make any necessary adjustments. You may need to make a follow-up visit to check your veneers and your gums.

Are there any risks involved with Dental Veneers?
Just like everything, Veneers have certain risks too:
The process cannot be undone.
Veneers can dislodge and fall off, although this is very unlikely. Avoid biting your nails, chewing on pencils, ice or other hard objects, also, clenching and grinding of teeth can chip veneers.
Veneers usually cannot be repaired if they crack or chip.
Some people may experience tooth sensitivity as enamel has been removed.
Things to keep in mind before you get veneers:
Gums and teeth must be healthy.
For patients who clench or grind their teeth, veneers are not a good choice as they can chip or break. Talk to your dentist about the concern before going ahead with the procedure.
The procedure once started cannot be undone - For example - The removal of tooth enamel.
Veneers are not permanent and it is possible for veneers to come loose over time.
As with all your dental procedures and treatments, discuss all your expectations and treatment options with your dentist.
Regular dental visits are essential for maintaining the health of your teeth and gums.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is the key to the longevity of the veneers. If you are looking for Dental Veneers treatment or Aesthetic Porcelain Veneers treatment in Bangalore or you have any concerns over the treatment, head to Sakra World Hospital.
