Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI Specialist in Bangalore

What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

Artificial insemination or intrauterine insemination (IUI) forms, by and large, the first line of infertility treatment. It is simple and inexpensive which is technically easy to perform.

Washed and concentrated sperm are placed directly in the uterus around the time when the ovary releases eggs.

Who are the couples chosen for IUI?

  1. Couples experiencing sexual dysfunction, wherein semen is not deposited in the vagina during intercourse.

  2. Male partner with mild sperm count and defective motility.

  3. Minimal endometriosis in the female partner.

  4. Couples with unexplained infertility.

  5. Donor sperm IUI when the male partner doesn’t produce semen at all.

How does IUI produce a pregnancy?

The rationale behind performing IUI is to place a good quality sperm, enriched with nutrition into the uterus, closer to the oocyte (egg) which is in the fallopian tube.IUI is done in either natural cycle or stimulated cycle. In the stimulated cycle, women are given fertility drugs to help them produce 2-3 oocytes in order to enhance the probability of conceiving. Hence, by placing the gametes (egg& sperm) close to each other. One is able to facilitate fertilization.

Sakra World Hospital is the best hospital for IUI treatment in Bangalore committed to scientific development and innovation in order to offer the patients the most effective treatments to achieve pregnancy.

What are the prerequisites for IUI?

  1. The woman should have eggs in her ovaries and should respond to fertility drugs by ovulation (releasing a mature egg).

  2. She should have at least one fallopian tube patent.

  3. The partner should have semen parameters in the normal range or mildly decreased numbers and motility of sperm.

How is IUI Procedure performed?

In order to find the day of ovulation, a series of scans are done. On the day of ovulation, the male partner is asked to provide a semen sample by masturbation. The semen is subjected to sperm wash or processing. Where it is mixed with sperm enriching media and filtered through special techniques to remove dead sperm & impurities from semen. This separates the good quality sperm from the rest of the content in the semen. The concentrated sample of healthy sperm is instilled into the uterus using a thin flexible catheter. It is a painless procedure and does not require rest post-procedure.

What are the Complications of IUI?

IUI is not associated with any significant complications. Multiple births can result due to ovarian stimulation, especially if too many mature eggs are produced in the treatment cycle. However, this is avoided by a judicious case of fertility drugs.

What to expect when you have the procedure?

It depends on several factors, the most important one being the indication for which IUI is done. The best results are seen in couples with sexual dysfunction. The success rate is 10-15% per cycle & the cumulative pregnancy rate is about 50% over four treatment cycles.

What is the success rate of the IUI procedure?

The procedure yields about a 15% pregnancy rate per cycle. Not more than 3 cycles should be tried. Especially in older age groups, in whom it is ideal to proceed to IVF without much delay. In youngsters (less than 26 years of age with good ovarian reserve) and in donor sperm treatment up to four cycles may be tried.
