Dr. Bawani Anand, has joined Sakra family as Senior Consultant - Neurology. She has completed her MBBS and MD, Internal Medicine from Madras Medical College, Madras. She has done her MRCP and FRCP from Royal College of Physicians, UK. She has obtained her Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Neurology and Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Clinical Neurophysiology from Royal College of Physicians, UK.
Dr. Bawani Anand comes with more than 20 years of rich and varied experience in Neurology. Her last assignment prior to joining at Sakra was with Sagar Hospital, Bangalore and where she has worked as Consultant Neurologist.

What is a Neuromuscular disorder?
Any disorders that involve nerve, nerve cell, the junction between nerve and muscle, called neuromuscular junction and the muscle itself all come under neuromuscular disorder.
What are the causes of Neuromuscular disorders?
Inherited, Hormonal, Metabolic, Autoimmune disorders, Dietary problems and Viral infection.
Who is involved in the treatment and management of Neuromuscular disorders?
It involves Neurologists, Adult Pediatrics, Electrophysiologist, including diagnosis of genetics.
What is the therapy is best suited for the majority of the neuromuscular disorder?
It is based on the diagnosis procedures, if you have an autoimmune neuromuscular disease when the body is producing antibodies against the nerve, junction nerve and the muscle and the muscle itself. So, if you are having an autoimmune type of neuromuscular disease, then Steroids like immunosuppressants are prescribed. Other immunosuppressants include azathioprine and cyclosporine.
For acute treatment, treatments such as plasmapheresis, which is a dialysis procedure to clean the blood and remove harmful antibodies.
Are Injections commonly suggested treatments?
Yes, the use of the intravenous form of steroids to suppress the autoimmune type of disorder. As steroids are the quickest form to bring relief as they are anti-inflammatory. If the muscle is inflamed, steroids help to reduce it.
Other forms of injections are intravenous immunoglobulins which are less toxic than steroids and little slower to act. Immunosuppressants such as cyclophosphamide which is given as pulse therapy.
