Dr. Dinesh Kini, currently the Director of Gastroenterology & Hepatobillary sciences at Sakra World Hospital is a pioneer in the field of Gastroenterology. He was trained from the one of the prestigious National institutes of this country and since moving to Bengaluru in 2001, he has contributed immensely for the development of Gastroenterology in the city. His contribution include – in the field of Paediatric Gastroenterology identifying diseases like Celiac disease and Cow’s milk allergy, which were relatively unknown in early 2000 and lot of kids use to suffer from persistent diarrhoea and growth failure. It needed creating awareness amongst pediatricians, developing lab tests (TTG), training pathologist and all these helped in identify and offering cure for suffering small children. During 2000-05 significant numbers patients with Liver cirrhosis with fluid accumulation in the abdomen (Ascites) had a very short survival of less than 6 months. Dr. Kini was one of the earliest practicing Gastroenterologist in the city who started the concept of weekly infusion of protein, interventional procedures like TIPSS where lot of these affordable patients had improved survival in the era when Liver transplant was unavailable in this country. Later he led a team of Interventional Radiologist, transplant surgeons, surgical Gastroenterologist and specialized GI Pathologist all under the same umbrella and developed the concept of comprehensive Gastrointestinal care and initiated a successful liver transplant program in the state. Dr. Dinesh Kini contributions also includes development of non-surgical treatment options for patients suffering with liver cancer (Radio-frequency Ablation/Chemoembolization/Radioembolization) which benefited innumerable number of patients. Dr. Dinesh Kini is also responsible for developing and performing high-end endoscopic interventions for patients suffering from jaundice due to obstruction of bile flow caused by Pancreatic/Gall bladder/Bile duct cancers and this helped in palliation and relief of Jaundice all this at the time when very few centres in the state were still emerging. It was Dr. Dinesh Kini who introduced the ethical concept of offering treatment ‘that suits the patient best and not what suits the doctor’ by creating Gastroenterology board comprising of specialized Medical Gastroenterologist, Surgical Gastroenterologist and Interventional Radiologist which eliminated referral bias and improving patient outcomes.
