How is Epilepsy Diagnosed?

The neurologist will review your symptoms and medical history. The evaluation may include a neurological exam to test your behaviour, motor abilities, mental function and other areas to diagnose.

Blood test done is to check for signs of infections, genetic conditions that may be associated with seizures.

There are other tests that are performed to detect brain abnormalities, such as:

1. Electroencephalogram (EEG):In this test, electrodes are attached to your scalp which records the electrical activity of your brain.

2. CT Scan:A CT scan uses X-rays to obtain cross-sectional images of the brain.

3. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI):An MRI uses magnetic and radio waves to create a detailed view of the brain.

4. Positron Emission tomography (PET):PET scans use a small amount of low dose radioactive material which is injected into a vein to visualize active areas of the brain and detect abnormalities.

How is Epilepsy treated?

Usually, neurologists begin the treatment of epilepsy with medication. If medications don’t treat the condition then the doctors may propose surgery or another type of treatment.

Medications - People with epilepsy can become seizure free by taking one anti-seizure medication also called anti-epileptic medication. The doctor will first prescribe a single medication at a relatively low dosage and may increase the dosage gradually until the seizures are well controlled.

Epilepsy Surgery - When medications don’t work then surgery may be an option. During the surgery, the surgeon removes the area of the brain that is causing seizures. Surgery is usually performed when tests show that:

1. Seizures originate in a small, well-defined area of the brain

2. The area of the brain to be operated on doesn’t interfere with vital functions such as speech, language, motor function, vision or hearing.

Sakra World Hospital has the best neurologists for treating epilepsy in Bangalore, they evaluate and treat a lot of people with epilepsy annually, including medical and surgical care for both common and complex problems in children with epilepsy.
