What factors should one consider while opting for a plastic surgeon?
While opting for plastic surgery or any surgery for that matter, the first thing to consider is the credentials of the surgeon whom you are seeking. Usually a plastic surgeon is trained for 18 to 20 years consisting of 5 and a half years of MBBS, 3 years of training in General surgery, followed by 3 years of training in Plastic Surgery and finally 2 or 3 years of fellowship in their specialities. Another important factor is the hospital. It is advisable to get your plastic surgery done in a tertiary care hospital. Please ensure that the hospital is NABH accredited that entails safety and quality as a really high priority in that hospital. Hence, the chances of complications are really low.
Is it true that getting the surgery done at an early age is better than later during the child’s life.
Every surgery needs to be done at the right time. For example, in cleft lip and palate - it happens in the first 3-6 months followed by the palate repair at around 9-12 months and that’s because the baby’s speech starts developing at the age of 9 months. There are many other surgeries as well where there are defects in the jaw and that happens at around 7-9 years of age. Finally, some touch up procedures like Rhinoplasty or jaw surgeries, which happens around 16-18 years of age since we need to wait for the complete maturity of the bone.
Plastic surgery should not be considered for women below 50 years of age. Is it true?
There is absolutely no restriction on age for plastic surgery, although, plastic surgery in the younger or adult age group has its own challenges. But everything depends on the safety profile of the patient and the hospital opted for treatment.
How does one know if they qualify for a plastic surgery?
First of all, when you consider the surgery, be sure of it. Then, if you feel that there is a tangible deformity in you, seek the help of an expert. An important thing is to evaluate is if the deformity is affecting the quality of your life, function or self-esteem. Form and function evaluation is vital.
What are the risks associated with plastic surgery?
The safety really depends upon where you get your surgery done - NABH accredited hospital where quality and safety standards are high. Any surgery has certain amount of risks and complications. But it is about informing the patient about the risks and other details. The consenting process is very important. It is a routine to take a written consent from the patient after explaining the details of the surgery, its risks and their expectations.
What is the ideal age for plastic surgery for the face?
There is no ideal age. All surgeries have to be done at the right time. Cosmetic surgery completely depends upon what the person wants.
Can a heart patient undergo plastic surgery?
Definitely. But we need to prioritize and see if the plastic surgery is essential, if it will worsen his/her heart condition, having an anaesthesia team and having a safe infrastructure  to assist the surgery safely.
