What is laparoscopy?
In laparoscopy, a surgeon makes small cuts about half-inch in size, instead of large cuts as in open surgery. For major surgery, 3-4 cuts are made and through these cuts, small tubes are placed. Carbon-di-oxide is used to fill the abdomen so that the surgeon will have more room to work. With these tubes, the surgeon uses a camera (nowadays we have the chip, HD and 3D cameras) attached to a telescope to watch the magnified view of the abdomen on the monitor.

What is the advantage of laparoscopy over open surgery?
  • Small cuts - less pain, faster recovery, the wound heals faster and less scarring
  • Less painless admission of pain medication
  • Less blood loss - less need for blood transfusion
  • Less hospital stay - discharge on the same day is possible in some surgeries
  • Less infection rates
What is the recovery time in a laparoscopic hysterectomy?
Laparoscopic hysterectomy recovery is fast - about 6 days to 2 weeks. They are mobilised on the same day of surgery and oral liquids are allowed on the same day of the surgery. Semisolid food starts on the next day after the surgery. 90 % of the patients recover in 2 weeks.

What post-hysterectomy problems are seen immediately after surgery and when to report it to the doctor?
After the hysterectomy, some patients may experience vaginal bleeding. This can last up to a week. In case if it is smelly or heavy bleeding occurs, you need to report to your doctor.

Sometimes after hysterectomy, patients tend to have a fever with chills, severe pain, redness or discharge from the incision.
Difficulty in passing urine and passing stools needs to be reported to the doctor.

What are the Advantages of laparoscopic hysterectomy over open hysterectomy?
Using a laparoscopic approach to remove the uterus offers a number of benefits than open surgery. Laparoscopic surgery uses smaller cuts than open surgery. Thus the patient may have less pain,  less blood loss, no stitch removals, less infections and can return to normal activities quicker than with open surgery.
