FAQ
What are the recent advances in anaesthesia?
Like all medical specialities, anaesthesia is also evolving all the time. It is continuously improving in terms of the equipment and technology we have. Feedback from patients has increased as well. Drugs are getting safer; they are getting better and more precise. Doctors are getting a better understanding of physiology, pathophysiology of diseases. But primarily, what is changed is the culture of teamwork. Anaesthesia is often compared with aviation. It involves effective communication, resource management, and situational awareness.
How is pediatric anaesthesia different than adults?
Children are more fragile than adults. Children undergoing anaesthesia causes great emotional distress not only to them but the parents as well. Technical procedures can be difficult to perform in children. Anaesthesiologist needs to take more care while titrating the drug, needs a greater degree of precession in choice of drugs, airway management, which involves a smaller margin of safety. Philosophy of care is different for children than adults.
How should parents prepare their children for anaesthesia?
Make them feel comfortable. Parents should tell a bit about the surgery but not in detail. Also, not giving them the right info might make them lose trust in medical professionals and hospitals. The idea must be conveyed in a way that they are taking him/her to the hospital to have something at the end of which they will feel better.
