He documented low vitamin D levels and low dietary calcium intake in urban and rural health subjects through a population survey.
By in-vitro studies of previtamin D synthesis, he showed that Indians could synthesize enough vitamin D by exposing 10 to 15% of body surface area to midday sun for 30 minutes.
His work on the dietary calcium and vitamin D status of the Indian population could potentially change the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) of India.
He showed that low vitamin D status as the cause of bone disease in primary hyperparathyroidism.
He was a co-chair in the development of “Clinical Practice Guidelines on Management of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (2012-13) – Executive Summary and Recommendations” for Indian Menopause Society.
He has studied vitamin D status in various endocrine and non-endocrine diseases like, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus - Epilepsy – Thyrotoxicosis – Crohn’s disease and Pulmonary Tuberculosis.
His scientific work showed that correction of vitamin D deficiency could improve the pancreatic beta cell secretory function.
His studies showed that renal tubular damage as the cause of bone disease in fluorosis (Ranked top 10 publications - year 2007 by Internet).
His work is internationally acclaimed and is quoted by many authors in their publications as well as in various textbooks.
He has several publications in international and national journals.
He has co-authored a book on diabetes and has written several chapters in many textbooks.
As recognition of his contributions to the National academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) conferred on him “Fellow academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS)” and the Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow and Edinburgh conferred on him the FRCP (Glasgow & Edinburgh).
He has won several awards like, “Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Award 2003 – Operational Research” by theMedical Council of India.
